Historical Maps
“Ninth Street, beginning at Broadway and running west to Izard, was the heart of black commercial life. In 1919, Ninth Street was thriving. The offices of black physicians, dentists, and life-insurance executives sat next to the business establishments of black barbers, restaurateurs, and photographers. But the jewel of the black community was the Mosaic Templars Building at Ninth and Broadway.” – Grif Stockley, Blood In Their Eyes; The Elaine Race Massacres of 1919, page 94; The University of Arkansas Press, Fayetteville, 2001
During the research phase of the Mosaic Templars restoration project, the planning team tracked the movement of businesses and residences along Ninth Street and Broadway from 1889 to 1968. This was done by cross-referencing Sanborn maps with Little Rock City Directories. In doing this research, it was hoped to put the history of the Mosaic Templars into context with the culture and history of Ninth Street as the center of black business in Little Rock.
The following maps are from 1913. Click on a map from the selection below to see where certain businesses and residences were housed from 1889 to 1968. (This is not a complete list. There were some inconsistencies between the Sanborn maps and the Little Rock City Directories.)
